Kathmandu January 8, 2010: In what appeared to a major political breakthrough, the big three parties – Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) [CPN-Maoist), Nepali Congress (NC) and Communist Party of Nepal (United Marxist-Leninist) [CPN-UML]- announced the much talked about High Level Political Mechanism (HLPM).
Nepali Congress parliamentary party leader Ram Chandra Poudel told media persons after the meeting of the top leaders this morning that the mechanism at its preliminary phase includes NC president Girija Prasad Koirala, Maoist chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and UML chairman Jhala Nath Khanal.
The top leaders of the three parties decided to form the mechanism during a meeting held at Koirala’s residence at Maharajgunj. Poudel said formation of mechanism has paved the way for smooth peace process, constitution-drafting and ending the months-long political uncertainty.
Maoist leaders had held internal discussion this morning before the meeting of big three parties. The parties had agreed for such mechanism in principle months ago but failed to give it a shape. According to their earlier agreements, the mechanism will include representatives from all parties in the parliament.
