MALLIKA SARABHAI TO OPPOSE L.K. ADVANI IN PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS
Advani is the BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate. To the delight of secular forces, he is challenged by Mallika Sarabhai. None could be more suitable an opponent of Advani than Mallika.
According to a dispatch from Aniruddha Das (ad2069@columbia.edu), Mallika Sarabhai will contest against L K Advani for the Gandhinagar (Gujarat) Parliamentary seat as an independent candidate. Mallika Sarabhai is a renowned Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam dancer, who along with her mother Mrinalini Sarabhai manages the Darpana Academy of Performing Arts located at Ahmedabad. In 1989 she performed hard-hitting solo theatrical works, Shakti: The Power of Women. As well, she direct and acted in numerous productions concerned with relevant social issues. As a noteworthy action, Mallika Sarabhai also wrote the script of the play Unsuni based on Harsh Mander’s book Unheard Voices. Arvind Gaur translate it in hindi and Mallika Sarabhai direct Unsuni for Darpana Academy, which was staged at many places in India. Mallika Sarabhai took the cause of the Gujarat riot victims and was the first to file a public interest litigation in the Supreme Court against the BJP government’s alleged role in fomenting communal violence across Gujarat.
Mallika Sarabhai said she had neither personally approached the Congress nor did the Congress offer to make her its candidate. She announced to be a people’s candidate. She may be the most suitable candidate to defeat Advani, and if she does, he would have done a great service to India.
