NEPAL: LAND COMMISSION CHIEF SAYS HE WILL PROVIDE LAND TO LANDLESS
Land to the landless is not the same thing as land to the tiller but it is something in the right direction.
High Level Scientific Land Reforms Commission (SLRC) chairman Haribole Gajurel has vowed to turn land-less people into landowners by rapidly “industrializing” the agriculture sector.
In his first interview to Kantipur Daily after being appointed to the powerful constitutional commission Wednesday, Gajurel said that to go about this SLRC will take immediate steps for increasing agriculture productivity by “acquiring lands”. He didn’t say how will he acquire or arrange land for the purpose.
Gajurel, who is the central working committee member of the Maoist party and first cousin of senior Maoist leader C.P Gajurel, also said that since “feudalism has already been wiped out [from the country]” the commission he heads will soon be working towards providing lands to land-less farmers. Paradoxically, Gajurel is considered a landlord in his home district of Sindhuli. When asked how much land he owns, Gajurel said, “I don’t have even a small piece of land in my name. Whatever I had, I have submitted to the party.” Source: nepalnews.com
