NARENDRA MODI NEEDS AN ELEMENTARY COURSE IN HISTORY
(Daya Varma. Based on a news item in the Hindu of November 11, 2013)
While inaugurating a hospital on November 10, Modi said that the founding patriarch of his Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), Syama Prasad Mukherjee was a “proud son of Gujarat”. Modi credited him for setting up the “India house in London” and added that Mukherjee “was considered the Guru of Indian revolutionaries” and “died in 1930”.
All of what Modi said is untrue. Syama Prasad Mukherjee was born in Kolkata and not Gujarat and he died in 1953 and not in 1930.
But Modi is not only displaying his ignorance in making the statement mentioned above, he is also revealing his stupidity. Of course a Mukherjee need not be born in Bengal but any one with minimum familiarity with India would think twice before attributing the place of birth of a Mukherjee (a typical Bengali name) outside of Bengal.
Even more revealing of Modi’s stupidity is to assign date of death of an assumed founder of BJP to be 1930. BJP is the brainchild of Rashtriya Swyamsevak Sangh (RSS), which was found in about 1926. If BJP was founded by a person who died in 1930, obviously the founding BJP was the first task of RSS and Mukherjee must have belonged to RSS. Perhaps all relevant members of BJP know that BJP did not exist in colonial India.
