NOVEL WAYS TO BE ANTI-MUSLIM AND GETTING AWAY WITH IT
Daya Varma
Canada, like many other western countries, invents various tricks to be racist and anti-Muslim but shroud it in fancy secular excuses. A small town of 1,300 near Montreal with no Muslim or immigrant population recently passed a code that the city would not allow stoning of women, female circumcision, etc.
This was the city’s way of coming out with their anti-Muslim prejudices. Then came the expulsion by the referee of a Muslim girl from the soccer field because she was wearing a Hijab. The reason given was “safety” as per FIFA rule; nothing to do with being anti-Muslim. However, FIFA allows the Hijab as long as it meets safety rules. Jean Charest, the Premier of Quebec, defended the referee, citing some silly experience of how, during his soccer playing days, boys were expelled because their shirt was not properly tucked in. Instead of launching a campaign against this Muslim phobia, the Quebec government has set up a commission to examine “reasonable accommodation”.
